NHL players playing in other leagues this season
Surely they don't need the money. With the money and time available to them, they can surely come up with a better way to stay in shape. The thought of NHL players stealing $600 a week jobs from other hockey players sickens me.

Should these players be stealing jobs, or should they arrange for their own training league?

---

"It is important to all of us  that we are using this time
productively, and we thought this was a great way to give hockey fans  and some deserving charities something to cheer about," said Martin Brodeur,
one of the player organizers of the Primus Worldstars Tour.
"We want to be on the ice playing hockey,
and we're hoping the tour puts some emphasis back on the game itself."

"All of the players hope that the Primus Worldstars Tour gives the fans some enjoyment prior to the holidays while it also helps two charities that do great work for children around the world," said Tie Domi.
"We know the fans miss seeing us play, and we're definitely missing being able to play in front of them. We are just looking forward to playing hockey."
I realize that this is a lockout, and any employee locked out of the employer's place of business should then be free to seek employment elsewhere. That is common sense.

The difference here is that some of these players make more money in one season than the majority of their fans will earn in a lifetime. They knew that this year carried the possibility of a long lockout, and were advised to prepare for it. That would include freeing up investment capital, to allow for living expenses. Surely out of 1.8 million (average salary) a player can set aside a few bucks.

I can understand the younger players and fringe players needing to hone their skills and top up their income, but these large money players should not be stealing jobs. In fact, in many unions, this type of behaviour is frowned upon, and sometimes grounds for disciplinary action, including expulsion from the union.

While I am certain that the European fans, are enjoying this opportunity to watch these players, why could they not have adopted the barnstorming format used by the World Stars team? Surely at least 4 or 5 or such teams could have been put together, travelling from town to town, and country to country, playing exhibition matches against club teams or all-star teams, and using some of the proceeds for worthy charities. That format is the type of thing all of the locked out players should be doing.

The thought of Detroit RedWings players, stealing $600 a week jobs to play for the Motor City Mechanics disgusts me. Certainly with their financial means, and time on their hands, they could have come up with an alternate way to keep their skills sharp, play in front of fans, and raise a bit of money.

I started this lockout on the side of the players, and I am still suspicious of the League's financial figures, (see ticket prices below), but the actions of many of the players during the lockout is causing me to rethink my position. Maybe they are a bunch of money-grubbing assholes, as many of my friends have been trying to tell me.

Bravo to all the players who took part in the World Stars Tour.

Here's an interesting story about a career AHL'er forced out of a job by the lockout. With so many NHL'ers still eligible to play in the AHL without going through waivers, there is a glut of players in the AHL, and players who would normally have had a job, are out on the street.
- AHLers paying steep price for lockout  - (THE FULL STORY)

EXCERPTS............
Rob Valicevic played 193 NHL games, paid his union dues on time and never questioned the actions of the hockey fraternity he believed in. Until now.

After spending the last four years shuttling back and fourth between the NHL and the American Hockey League, the 33-year-old is now suiting up for the low-level Flint Generals of the United Hockey League because NHLers have forced him out of an AHL job. Now with a family to feed, bills to pay and no end in sight to the lockout, Valicevic is so angry at NHLers taking hockey jobs in the minors, he said he’d gladly cross a picket line.

"If you would have asked me six months ago if I would’ve held the line, I would’ve said, `Yes,’. " said Valicevic. "But you ask me now? If they have replacement players in the NHL, I have no qualms about crossing."
----
"It amazes me that these guys have the audacity to say, `Don’t cross the line’ when they’re pushing guys out that are making $800 a week to support their families," said Valicevic, who played in the NHL with Nashville, L.A., Anaheim and Dallas. "These guys have known for four years this was going to happen."

Unlike the rest of the issue,
this part is a joke.

Help the POOR hockey players
Please help us help the needy!

On the bright side, several player agents were quoted on March 4, 2005 after a meeting with the PA, as saying that they would not represent any player who chose to cross the picket line if the league chooses to start next season with replacement players.
Noble sentiments, for as long as that lasts. It's like trying to keep bears away from the garbage dump.

Membership is free!!!

Membership is currently over 26,000 fans.

The NHLFA executive has already met with Gary Bettman,
and is constantly putting the concerns of the membership
in front of both the league and the player's association.

(Boone and Jim Spendlove, who together started the NHLFA in April 1998,
met with Bettman in late April, 99, seeking a voice in the so-called "Fan Exhibition"
at the 2000 NHL All-Star game scheduled for Toronto.
Bettman issued a challenge, said Boone - get your membership up to 75,000 and you're in. )

We need 50,000 more concerned hockey fans to be given a respected voice.
